Investor Ronald Baron, who has been loading up on the stock for some time has around five million shares or around 16% of the company. AT&T and Hughes are also involved in the company. Baron from a Money magazine article a few months ago said that it should be a $100 stock. Baron is an interesting guy that claims he likes small cap stocks especially ones that he can personally go out and talk with the CEO (new to the company this year Gary Parsons from MCI fame). I personally like skyc and have read messages from some of its customers that say that it is an excellent service, although for personal phone communications it is still a little expensive. But this is not the market they are after, at least not at the moment. Last quarter they had 13,400 subscribers up significantly from six months earlier when thay had 6,300. They figure their break even point is around 100,000 subscribers. There is a bunch of other companies that are trying to have a competing service in this market like Iridium, Bill Gates and a bunch of others. The competitors are pretty much all planning to use LEO satellites instead of a GEO stationary satellite like skyc -- but none of them are actually providing a service yet, obviously these other companies see a market. |
