Nutraceutix acquires licensing rights to lung cancer inhibiting compound
REDMOND, WASH. (June 18) BUSINESS WIRE -June 18, 1997--Nutraceutix, Inc.
(OTC BB: NUTX) announced today that it had signed a definitive
agreement with BioChemix, Inc. of Austin, Texas, for exclusive
worldwide rights to market products containing the patented compound
Calcium D-glucarate for the inhibition of lung cancer.
Developed by researchers at various institutions including M.D.
Anderson Cancer Center at the University of Texas, Calcium D-glucarate
is a compound found naturally in certain fruits and vegetables.
BioChemix is a technology transfer company whose principals are
researchers at cancer research institutions. Terms of the licensing
agreement were not disclosed.
"We believe the availability of this compound will be especially
attractive to the estimated 50 million former smokers who have already
taken an important step to improve heir health, but it will also appeal
to people who must live or work in smoky environments and to the 40
million people who still smoke," said William St. John, Nutraceutix
president.
"This unique formulation of Calcium D-glucarate contains natural
chemicals and antioxidants that provide some degree of protection
against the potential carcinogenic harm imposed by elements found in
cigarettes and other tobacco products."
St. John stressed that the only guarantee an individual has against
developing a smoking-related cancer or other illness is to give up
smoking. He pointed out, though, that while smoking cessation
substantially and immediately reduces risks of heart and respiratory
diseases, it can take decades for risk of lung cancer to return to
normal levels. "Calcium D-glucarate provides an increased degree of
protection during those years," he said.
Nutraceutix intends to market this unique formulation of Calcium
D-glucarate as a daily health supplement. A derivative of Calcium
D-glucarate, glucaric acid, is found in low concentrations in the human
body as a natural protective compound. The company also received first
rights to the applications of the patent to breast cancer prevention.
Nutraceutix researches, develops, manufactures and distributes health
promoting natural compounds, food ingredients and animal health
products. Founded in 1983, the company earlier this year increased its
production capacity eight-fold to keep pace with its rapidly expanding
sales.
