Return to SPIN-OFFS "secret hiding places of stock market profits"

Joel Greenblatt, in his new book "Stock Market Genius" explains how you can get an investing edge by watching for certain things in spin-offs and other plays. A lot of the process involves pouring over the volumes of information in the SEC EDGAR files looking for information about insider stock option and rights and warrants perks. Also the price earnings and other valuations of the spinor and spinee.

If you have any comments about spin-offs or how to find things easier in the SEC files, please post them here.

My total experience with spin-offs is accidentally receiving some shares of Halter Marine when it was spun off from Trinity Industries for $ 11. A newsletter guru advised not to buy any shares but instead put the money into more Trinity shares. Now several months later Halter is about $ 39 and has passed Trinity. If I had read the book before the spin-off I would have bought more Halter.

Thanks for any comments on this subject.
