Recently, I read an insightful article about the economic troubles of Asia, written by Walter Russell Mead, in the May 1998 issue of Worth Magazine . As an investment portfolio manager, I find myself rather curious about how US technology firms are being affected---and just how much they are affected. Obviously, the problem is sociological as much as it is economical. Lately, the interplay of various links and relationships we have with Asia have been monopolizing my thoughts. Obviously, increased competition to export between Japan, Korea, Thailand, China, and others is certainly one of the primary factors. A lack of consumer spending is another. All in all, I would like to have an ongoing discussion with interested members to gain a more profound understanding. |
