LANGHORNE, Pa., March 31 /PRNewswire/ -- Garrett Cohn, President of Digital Descriptor Systems, Inc (OTC Bulletin Board: DDSI - news) announced today that the company has received exclusive worldwide manufacturing and marketing rights for a real time contactless fingerprint capture system. Worldwide patent protection is being sought.
The revolutionary system is based on a breakthrough use of image capturing technology. DDSI will now offer the system, Compu-Scan, along with its mugshot imaging system, Compu-Capture, to its worldwide customer base, Cohn said.
The market for law enforcement systems for automated fingerprint identification systems is expected to grow to $250 million in 2000 from about $120 million in 1997 and likely will exceed $300 million in 2002, according to a report published in November by Solomon Smith Barney Holdings Inc. in New York. DDSI is the leading vendor of computerized imaging mugshot systems with more than 300 locations installed worldwide.
The new system, Compu-Scan, is approximately one-eighth the size of current fingerprint systems. It will be priced less than competitive models. The fingerprint is captured by being passed over an opening in the briefcase-sized scanner and due to its non-contact nature there is little training required for police or corrections officers.
''This contactless method of capture also eliminates the expense of replacing glass platens due to wear. Distortion, smearing, oily and dry fingerprint problems are issues of the past with Compu-Scan,'' Cohn continued.
It will be the first Livescan capture system not to require a dedicated PC. It can be networked for enterprise-wide solutions. Software will verify the quality of the fingerprint (or palm print) before being stored, forwarded or printed on FBI-approved ten print cards. Matching and validating software is already in beta test.
''We will be submitting Compu-Scan to the FBI for certification shortly. We already have several of our installed-base agencies indicating purchases after FBI approval amounting to over $300,000 in sales,'' Cohn said.
''We are in negotiations to license other OEM's and distributors in the personnel ID field with the goal of developing sales that will increase our market penetration and our manufacturing capabilities,'' Mr. Cohn added.
Digital Descriptor Systems Inc develops and markets computer installations, consisting of hardware and software, which utilize digitized technology to capture video and scanned images, digitize the image, link the digitized images to text and store image and text. The Company has adopted its digitized technology and software into several core products. The Company's products include Compu-Capture, a system for booking suspects by law enforcement agencies and tracking inmates by correctional facilities; Compu-Color, a software program for record keeping for tax assessors; and Compu-Capture ID, a program to produce identification cards and security devices for governments or private industry.
