American Xtal Technology makes semiconductor substrates from materials other than silicon for manufacturers of products such as wireless and fiber-optic telecommunications systems, lasers, light-emitting diodes, satellite solar cells, and consumer electronics. Substrates made up of gallium arsenide account for about 95% of American Xtal Technology's sales. The firm also makes substrates using other materials such as indium phosphide and germanium, with others in development. The company's customers include Hewlett-Packard, Motorola, and Sony.
