While my work leads me to conclude that there certainly will be some problems resulting from the Year 2000 date change, there seems to be a boat load of info out in everyday life that simply isn't true about Y2K. One of the first experiences I had with Y2K urban legends was being unable to verify the commonly mentioned consumer and safety concern that an embedded chip in newer automobiles would render most vehicles useless, unreliable, or unsafe at the date turnover. While this is frequently mentioned on TV and in articles, I have only been able to confirm that the vehicle concern is likely limited to specialty vehicles such as emergency response units. The purpose of this thread is to identify Y2K urban legends that are making the rounds, perhaps wasting everyone's time trying to verify non-existent risks when time could be better used on known items needing to be addressed. Post your Year 2000 Urban Legends here. Did ya' here the one about all the planes falling out of the sky at the stroke of midnight? |
