Most western cultures perceive deer velvet as an aphrodisiac used in Asia. In reality it is so much more.
It has been used in Traditional Oriental Medicine as a nourishing tonic for over 2,000 years. It's primary use is to maintain general good health.
Improved sexual function can result from improved general health which is probably where the 'myth' originated from - not a bad 'side-effect' !
Western science has shown velvet is beneficial in improving the immune system, promoting growth, as an anti-inflammatory and to improve athletic performance. This science is being carried out predominantly in New Zealand - the world's biggest deer farm !
Deer velvet is removed humanely using techniques developed in consultation with veterinarians and animal welfare groups to ensure the welfare of stags. Velvet grows annually and if not removed, calcifies into bony racks of antlers which stags use as weapons against each other.
