Internet service provider (ISP) AppliedTheory has long brought theory into practice. The ISP provides Internet connectivity, including high-speed dedicated Internet access and virtual private networks; Web-enabled database integration, including site design; and Web hosting. Established in 1985 as NYSERNet to bring New York universities onto the Net, AppliedTheory has about 650 customers, mainly New York public institutions and midsized businesses (and midsize departments of large corporations). Long-distance carrier IXC owns 34% of AppliedTheory, and Grumman Hill Investments another 17%. IXC is building a coast-to-coast network, over which AppliedTheory will reach Internet customers outside of New York.
