GlobeSpan Semiconductor designs integrated circuits used in data transmission equipment that spans the cyber-world. Its chipsets are incorporated into modem-related digital subscriber line (DSL) equipment and enable speedy data transmission for use in corporate network, Internet, and video-on-demand applications. They also contain a microprocessor and software that can be used to set data transmission rates. GlobeSpan, which emerged from Lucent Technologies' 1996 spinoff of AT&T Paradyne, outsources the manufacture of its products to Lucent. Customers include Cisco (48% of sales), NEC (13%), and Ascom Hasler (9%). A majority-owned partnership of Texas Pacific Group owns 93% of GlobeSpan Semiconductor. |
