If Geron could turn back time, it would make a lot of money. The company (which takes its name from the Greek word for old man) conducts research on the aging process, focusing on telomeres, structures that act as a molecular "clock" for cellular aging, and telomerase, an enzyme that seems to prolong the cellular lifespan. By creating a telomerase inhibitor, Geron hopes to allow the telomeres of a cancerous cell to continue aging and eventually die. Its research has applications to skin aging, osteoporosis, and Alzheimer's disease. Geron has research collaborations with the research groups at Johns Hopkins and University of Wisconsin that discovered a method for culturing human stem cells.
