The S&P 500 Index of large cap US stocks is probably the
index that moves billions of dollars. Inclusion or
exclusion of a company from it can cause changes in
the company perspectives from a technical perspective.
From a fundamental perspective, it reflects a change
in fortunes of the company as perceived by analysts at
Standard & Poor. Other reasons could me mergers and
acquisistions and spinoofs.
