XM Satellite Radio Holdings has an out-of-this-world
strategy for radio broadcasting. The company plans to offer
digital-quality programming transmitted via S-Band satellite
channels to home and car stereos. It plans to offer 100
channels, including music genres such as classic rock,
modern jazz, and Tejano, as well as a variety of news,
sports, and public affairs shows. A subsidiary of American
Mobile Satellite, it has partnered with consumer electronics
firms Alpine, Delphi, Pioneer, and Sharp to make receivers
for its subscription-based service. It has an agreement with
General Motors (an investor) to install its equipment in GM
cars. Other investors include Clear Channel
