Avici has truly awesome potential.
Avici is a "terabit" networking start-up that seeks fill the high-end equipment market serving companies like AT&T and MCI WorldCom and other Telcom giants who require the very best equipment to handle the exponential growth in network capacity.
This market for high-end switching and routing equipment is expected to reach $5.5 billion by the year 2003. Thus, Avici directly competes with Juniper Networks, Cisco Systems, Nortel Networks and Lucent Technologies.
But the question is how well can Avici compete with these giants in the cutting edge networking field.
According to John Griebling, Enron's vice president of network operations and engineering, "no one is even a close second" to Avici's technology in terms of performance, capacity and software systems.
While one wildly enthusiastic endorsement does not a Cisco make, the fact is that this is a company well worth watching when it becomes public this year.
