Return to A Mad Cow/Prion Test

The problem: Mad Cow disease (BSE, Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy) has
been linked by Dr.Prusiner (UC,SF.) and others to CJD (human Creuzfeldt-Jakob
disease). CJD is a fatal neuro-degenerative disease that has been rare.
But so was AIDS when it began!

The breakthrough: Dr M Harrington of Cal.Inst.Tech. has devised a simple test
(viz Finan.Post Toronto April 12) that uses an antibody to identify the
protein markers that can be extracted from live cows' spinal fluid.

The opportunity: identify key firms that can profit from this sort of response
to BSE and CJD. Buy their stock cheap.

The appeal: will those who can, please contribute news capsules or results
of web or literature searches to this thread? For example, do a resume of any
articles on CJD, BSE, scrapie, kuru, prions, non-mendellian genetic material,
use of offal in livestock feed, antibody testing.

Remember: the object of this thread is to identify commercial opportunity related
to BSE/CJD/scrapie/kuru. SHARE your secrets.
Consider that if BSE/scrapie were to spread, all beef/sheep/pigs/poultry and
dairy products could be at risk worldwide.
Scrapies sheep have been found last week in Canada.
