Avanex has a tonic -- a pho-tonic -- for sluggish optical networks. Communications service providers and networking equipment makers use the company's miniature photonic processors to help increase the speed and capacity of fiber-optic networks. These processors work in part by compensating for optical signal problems during transmission. Osicom, MCI WorldCom, and Hitachi together account for nearly 95% of sales. Most sales are in North America, but the company has formed distribution pacts with representatives in Europe and Japan. Entities affiliated with venture capital firms Crosspoint Venture Partners, Sequoia Capital, JAFCO America Ventures, and Mayfield Fund own about 60% of Avanex.
