Quest Diagnostics' quest to be the world's #1 clinical laboratory came to a happy ending with its purchase of SmithKline Beecham's clinical lab operations. Quest Diagnostics annually performs more than 50 million routine tests (such as cholesterol, HIV, pregnancy, alcohol, and pap smear tests) at some 14 regional centers, 140 smaller labs, and 800 patient service centers. Its esoteric testing lab in California performs complex, low-volume tests. The company serves doctors, hospitals, and HMOs, as well as large corporations, government agencies, prison systems, and other labs. SmithKline Beecham plc owns about 30% of Quest Diagnostics (a 1996 Corning spinoff).
