Pixelworks makes powerful, pixie-sized image
processors. The company designs
system-on-a-chip integrated circuits (ICs) that
enable visual displays -- including Internet,
video, and computer graphics -- on electronic
systems such as PCs and TVs. Its
ImageProcessor ICs combine microprocessor,
memory, software, and digital signal processor
components on a single space-saving device.
Companies such as Compaq and Sony have
more than 75 products in development that use
ImageProcessor. Asian customers account for
about 90% of sales. Pixelworks, which
outsources its manufacturing to Asian foundries,
is seeking expansion into the Web appliance
market. Shareholders include Battery Ventures
(30%) and Sequoia Capital (21%).
