Suffering from a broken heart? Thoratec's there for the rebound. The company makes artificial heart devices for patients awaiting a heart transplant. Its lead product, the FDA-approved Ventricular Assist Device (VAD), uses a blood pump, a console to activate the pump, and tubes linking the pump to the heart. The pump is worn outside the body, allowing for patient mobility. Thoratec is also developing HeartMate, an implantable heart-assist device. Other products include Aria (in clinical trials) and Vectra, small grafts used in hemodialysis and coronary artery bypass surgery. Thoratec bought its rival, Thermo Cardiosystems, and has a distribution pact with Guidant.
This company seems to have huge potential. Would appreciate any input you may have about Thoratec.
Thank you,
