Novell suffered a debilitating loss that was much, much worse than expected. VARs are deserting Novell in droves (pick up a copy of the latest Reseller Magazine). The company has zero momentum. Let’s face it, Novell is like Mexico 1990--selling its future to support the peso. (Read Novell stock buyback).
Only the tough, the die-hards, and fools are left to support Novell, and these people all use Macs. Why? They were born to suffer:
Suffering the shock of continually dropping stock (Sisyphus would have bought both NOVL and AAPL to break the monotony).
Suffering the indignity of justifying a losing position in a dying company that nobody wants.
Suffering for an optimistic glimmer of distant hope--a turnaround, a buy-out, a chance to get some investment back (in maybe three years).
How fast can you burn US$1,000,000,000? It took Apple about six months. And today they just borrowed convertible junk of $575,000,000 to get them a longer rope. At least Novell prefers a bungy cord.
Nobody, NOBODY, does a strategy like Microsoft! How much longer until Apple makes an NT machine? |
