The technology and resources exist today to greatly reduce our dependence on imported oil. What is lacking is policy for implementation. A key example is in the field of transportation. Hybrid vehicles, economically available today, can achieve comparable fuel economy to fuel cell vehicles (economic in a decade or two) when considering all the energy consumed.

In other sectors, wind power is the fastest growing form of power generation, coal technology has become Clean Coal Technology, and cogeneration and trigeneration are now commercial.
