Al Gore is a self avowed socialist. He is admired by reporters from the liberal press as being brilliant. His response to an inquiry into his illegal use of the Whitehouse ofr campaign solicitation was a hair spliting "there was no controlling legal entity" thus enshrining the theory that if you are not caught, you really didn't commit a crime.
In February 2006 he gave a speech in Saudi Arabia financed by the Bin Ladens in which he made deliberate mischaracterizations of US policies designed to assist Al Quaeda terrorists in propagandising against the US. One alternate theory is that the press has been overestimating his intellectual capacity. Another alternate theroy is that he has recenntly sustained an injury impeding his cognitive ability.
