Return to Polite Political Discussion- is it Possible? An Experiment.

The experiment is, imo, a failure. But, the thread remains- so
1. don't call anyone here a name OTHER than their own alias- unless you are friends, and you are sure the other person won't object. Don't call anyone else names either- I can't stand "Shrub" and I don't like the stupid names made up for democrats either. I know middle school was a fabulous time in some people's lives, but for a little while, on this thread, let's venture in to more adult territory- like high school.

2. don't call groups names that are nasty (eg crazy liberals, crazy conservatives)

3. Don't harass or stalk other posters. If someone asks you not to post to them, or about them, don't post to them or about them. That's all there is to it. There shouldn't have to be a rule about this when one is dealing with putative adults, but on SI it's clear that it IS needed. How sad.

4.I'm not your mother, and I'm not the government. I don't have to put up with you, and the first amendment doesn't apply. If I like you, or your politics, I'm much more likely to put up with your crap than if i don't like you or your politics. If you've given me sh*t on SI don't expect a lot of generosity for your behavior (I've no idea why people would expect that, but it's clear that people expect to treat people like sh*t, but get better treatment in return. Go figure.)

I appreciate the effort people made to be polite here- those of you who made an effort. Whether I agree with your politics or not, I applaud you, and I hope you'll keep it up. This wasn't the runaway success I hoped for, but the absence of name calling has been rather thrilling. That alone made it worthwhile. I get so SICK of seeing name calling. I can't tell you how depressing it is to see adults do that. Anyway, keep up the good work, those of you who did the good work on the left and the right (and there were plenty of you on both sides, well done).
