Gemalto was created in June 2006 as a Gemplus and Axalto "merger of equals." Axalto was formerly the Smart Card and Terminal Department of Schlumberger/Sema, and at the time of the merger each former rival claimed to be the worlds largest smart card manufacturer, and they had claimed that for several years prior as they duked it out in the marketplace.
