| CONTEST PORTFOLIO SUBMISSION DEADLINE MONDAY, 1/14/2013, 4PM EST!
Welcome to the 2013 Biotech Charity Contest.
Here are the 2013 Contest Guidelines:
1) Each contestant starts with a virtual $100,000 cash to be allocated to a portfolio of biotech stocks. At the Contest’s end date, Tuesday, December 31, 2013, 4PM EST, the contestant with the year’s best-performing portfolio will select a charity to which other contestants are pledged to donate.
2) Only biotech stocks are eligible to be included in Contest portfolios. (Traditionally, we've defined "biotech" very broadly. However, if one or more contestants strongly object to a particular stock being categorized as a biotech, I’ll use my judgement to determine whether that stock is eligible for the Contest.)
3) Each portfolio should include a minimum of Eight stocks and a maximum of 10 stocks.
4) Each portfolio stock’s allocation is limited to a maximum of 20% and a minimum of 5%.
5) I use the Yahoo Finance symbols to download quotes. So if Yahoo uses a suffix in a stock symbol, please include it when posting your picks. To make it easier for me to set up my spreadsheet, here are two examples of the best way to post your picks: ARIA 10% AMF.TO 15% As indicated above, all I need is the symbol (in UPPERCASE) and %age of $100,000 you wish to invest. Please leave about five spaces between the symbol and %age.
6) Contestant portfolios may be posted on this thread or in a Silicon Investor PM to me.
7) Given issues raised in the 2012 Contest, I’ve tried to devise a way to set the initial portfolio stock prices that’s fair but also not too much of a hassle for me. In particular, I’ve tried to prevent what took place last year, where a few contestants made stock picks after market-moving news, yet the guidelines set initial stock prices for the picks prior to when such news became public. So, here’s how I’ll set the initial portfolio stock prices for the 2013 Contest:
A) For portfolio stock picks submitted prior to Monday, 12/31/12, 4PM EST, I’ll use the Monday, 12/31/12, 4PM EST closing prices. (The greater the number of portfolios posted prior to 12/31/12, the easier it will be for me to set up the Contest spreadsheets.)
B) For portfolio stock picks submitted after Monday, 12/31/12, 4PM EST, but prior to Monday, 1/14/13, 4PM EST, I’ll use the 4PM closing prices for the first trading day following the day the portfolio was posted. (For example, for a portfolio posted on Friday, 1/4/13, I’ll use the 4PM closing prices for Monday, 1/7/13.) C) For portfolio stock picks predominantly traded on a foreign market, I’ll use the closing prices (converted to US$) for the foreign market’s first trading day following the day the portfolio was posted. In addition, in tracking Contest stock picks, foreign stock prices will be converted to US$ using the appropriate and current foreign exchange rates.
D) Notwithstanding these guidelines for setting initial portfolio stock prices, contestants won’t be allowed to take unfair advantage of market moving news. In such cases (hopefully, there won’t be any), I’ll use my judgement to determine a fair initial stock price.
8) No trading is allowed during the Contest year, with the initial portfolio being held until the Contest end date: Tuesday, December 31, 2013, 4PM EST.
9) In the case of buyouts for cash the proceeds will be reallocated to the remaining portfolio stocks. The initial portfolio percentage allocations to those stocks will be used to determine the reallocation percentages.
10) Foreign and penny biotech stocks have traditionally been considered eligible. (However, if one or more contestants strongly object to a particular stock (e.g., it's substantially illiquid or trades at a super-low price), I’ll use my judgement to determine whether that stock is eligible for the Contest.)
11) A contestant's pledge amount and designated charity may be posted along with the initial portfolio, or at a later date. Pledge amounts shall be donated to the charity selected by the Contest winner.
Please post any questions, additions, comments, suggestions, objections, etc. re the above guidelines. For prospective new contestants who’d like to browse the 2012 Contest board, here’s the link: Subject 58498
