It has been very difficult to get information on the Comdex show in Las Vegas. Apparently, the rage of the show was anything related to the Internet and the idea that a small, inexpensive, single purpose machine would one day (soon) replace the more expensive, more powerful, multi-dimensional technology which we have grown accustomed to seeking and which Bill Gates and Andrew Grove have been providing. The price action in both MSFT and INTC this past week was horrific (again) and despite great sales numbers and positive earnings during their most recent quarters, analysts continue to downgrade these companies. I would have thought that, given the very positive response to Windows 95 by the public, generally, and with forecasts for microprocessor demand growing geometrically, that these stocks would see their multiples expand not shrink. Does anyone know more about what was said at Comdex? Where are analysts and industry people getting the idea that a $500 machine for "internet only" is the next great marketing platform? Finally, does anyone think that Wintel won't be a player in the Internet game? Your thoughts and information are appreciated. |
