GEOLOGICAL MAPPING
On September 5 and 6, 1998, a program of geological mapping and sampling was carried out on claim #1076837. Mr. Douglas Boddy of Advocate Harbour, Nova Scotia accompanied the author, representing Prodigy. Using the north boundary of the claim as a base line, a flagged grid was established with the lines every 25-m and stations at 25-m intervals. The base line was started at the #4 post and lines were numbered easterly toward the #1 post. The intent of the survey was to locate and sample all the old trenches put in by previous operators and to assess the garnet content of all bedrock exposures along the garnet bearing outcrop that follows the north boundary of the claim. A total of 415-m of base and 1,300-m of flagged line were established. Samples were taken from outcrops and the old workings. A rough estimate of the garnet content of exposed bedrock was noted and plotted on the accompanying map.
The garnet-bearing horizon forms a steep 100-m south-facing slope with a drop of about 30-m from the base line to the bottom of the slope. The formation has a steep south dip of about 10 degrees and strikes roughly east &ndash west. The garnets are not evenly distributed within the formation, with locally lean and rich sections. The average garnet content over the area mapped, using a visual estimate is between 20 and 25 percent. The dimension are 100-m at the widest and 300-m along strike. The depth of the deposit is unknown. A conservative estimate of the tonnage would be several hundred thousand tons.
CONCLUSIONS
The program of mapping and sampling has documented the existence of a large garnet deposit on the Dana Township property. The average content of the exposed bedrock is at least 10%, with many sections grading greater than 20% fine to coarse crystalline garnets. The dimensions of the deposit indicate the probability of over 100,000 cu m of garnet bearing material from surface to a depth of 30 m. The garnets are not of gem quality but could be suitable for abrasive applications.
