AUSTRALIA'S health system has been put on alert after China reported the first outbreak of the deadly SARS respiratory disease in almost a year.

Chinese authorities last night confirmed that up to eight people had been struck down by SARS. The source is believed to be workers at a Beijing laboratory which was researching the virus. As of late yesterday, one person was reported to have died – the mother of a worker at the laboratory.

The laboratory at China's Centres for Disease Control has been shut down and almost 200 of its staff quarantined ahead of an urgent visit this week by an international health team from the World Health Organisation.
