Good News – Deficit Projections Lowered

PoliPundit.com

Now, some might think that when they read this article saying tax receipts in April exceeded Treasury predictions and the budget deficit projections were therefore lowered, that the top story in every newspaper today would say “Democrats Wrong – Bush Tax Policy Working.” Of course anyone thinking they would ever see that headline would have to be from Mars or be utterly unfamiliar with the American MSM.

The headline I proposed above would be accurate, though. After all, Democrats have blamed the Bush tax cuts for bankrupting the country. They have for years claimed that tax cuts result in reduced revenues, in spite of the effects of the Reagan tax cuts. Since news like that in the Washington Post today flies in the face of the rhetoric we have heard from Democrats for years (actually decades) it should be big news when they are shown to be wrong. But it won’t be. Instead we will read about how this is an anomaly and it will be explained by a million other factors. The fact that reduced tax rates often result in increased revenue is something that may never be recognized by the followers of Paul Krugman.

Update: I may have given a wrong impression that I believe recent figures are due to Bush tax cuts and nothing else. That is, of course, not true. I hoped most would read the article linked and see the other factors (a few of the million I refer to) cited for the recent numbers. All those things should be taken into consideration and good numbers for one short period should not be overstated. However, my point is that Bush’s tax cuts are cited by Democrats everyday as the sole reason for any bad economic news including employment and deficit figures. They are raised anytime there is talk of cutting anything whatsoever out of the federal budget. If the tax cuts get blamed everytime the deficit projections go up, shouldn’t they also be cited when deficit projections go down, especially when the projection goes down due to increased revenue?
