Applied Materials to Cut 1,700 Jobs

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Applied Materials Inc. (NasdaqNM:AMAT - news) on Wednesday said it will slash about 1,700 jobs, or 10 percent of its work force -- its second round of cuts this year -- amid the worst-ever slump in the microchip industry.

Applied Materials, the world's biggest maker of semiconductor-manufacturing equipment, said the cuts include 450 positions at its Silicon Valley operations in California and 600 positions in Austin
