RESEARCH ALERT-UBS Warburg starts apparel, footwear cos

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

NEW YORK, March 28 (Reuters) - UBS Warburg's new apparel
and footwear analyst Jeff Edelman on Wednesday started coverage
of 14 companies in the textile and apparel sectors, including
Jones Apparel Group Inc. , Coach Inc. , Reebok
International Ltd. and Nike Inc.
Edelman rated the following as buy: luxury accessories
retailer Coach; Polo Ralph Lauren Corp. ; outdoor apparel
and footwear maker Columbia Sportswear Co. ; Reebok and
outdoor apparel and footwear maker Timberland Co. .
He gave hold ratings to Nike; Jones Apparel; Kellwood Co.
; apparel makers Liz Claiborne Inc. , Kenneth
Cole Productions Inc. and VF Corp. ; Nautica
Enterprises Inc. ; Tommy Hilfiger Corp. and
sportswear retailer Venator Group Inc. .
In a research note, Edelman said consolidation has changed
the apparel and footwear industry markedly over the past
decade. Most companies in the sector are mature and need to
make acquisitions to grow.
Edelman said the sector is driven by different dynamics,
which could slow the growth of many companies. Still, a number
of firms within the sector are gaining market share, widening
their global footprint and have momentum and margin
opportunity, he said.
