The most recent data of which I'm aware put nominal CDS totals at $16.1 trillion in the US (as of 10/1/2008) and $57.3 trillion world wide (as of 6/2008). The US CDS total includes total return swaps and credit spread options as well as CDSs.

I have a full page covering both US (data from the Treasury OCC) & world wide (data from the BIS) derivatives.
