Ian, you said >.I would think that any publication that tells you to sell something because it's down and to buy something because it's up might be highly suspect. I'd much rather buy AMAT now than 3 weeks ago.<

I should have said VV gives a buy signal when a stock is going up(to take advantage of momentum) and a sell signal when a
stock is going down (to protect from losses). It does this
by comparing stock price to a limit price (which is adjusted daily).

IBD bases its system on momentum, also. But VV goes further by
also considering value, safety and earnings growth.

It is important to realize that different investment methods exist
and are not mutually exclusive. The buy, sell and hold signals
should not be followed slavishly. VV DOES allow you to scan the
entire 7000 stock data base for "bottom fishing". If the fishing
expedition comes up with a stock you like, it will probably have
a sell rec. But you may then elect to put that stock in a watch
list and look for signs of revival before buying.

Let's assume TA tells you that AMAT has resistance at 37. Some
entirely rational investors will place a buy order that is not
executed below 37. They want to make sure AMAT has moved up past
the resistance point (something that could take a while). To do
this requires faith in their TA, of course. I have never done this,
but I have sat on dead money for months.
