Wireless Week

Third-generation wireless services got a step closer to reality in Europe this week as carriers contracted with vendors for billions of dollars in network-development deals. Nokia won the bulk of the recent contracts, pushing rival Ericsson into a back seat.

Orange plc, owned by France Telecom, awarded Nokia contracts in the United Kingdom as well as France and Germany totaling more than $1 billion. Nokia will be the sole provider of Orange 3G UMTS network services and gear in the U.K. The Finnish manufacturer also will provide infrastructure to Intineris in France and MobileCom -- 28 percent owned by Orange -- in Germany.

Ericsson, however, will also get a $446 million slice of MobilCom's network business. In France, Nokia will share Orange-related equipment deals with Alcatel and Japan's Fujitsu

Yesterday, Nokia said it struck network deals with Hutchison 3G U.K. Ltd. and Cable & Wireless Optus of Australia totaling close to $900 million. Hutchison 3G says it expects to have 3G services up and running in 2002, about two years after Great Britain's blockbuster third-generation license auction that brought in about $36 billion. <<
