It seems that the software can be used with other readers as well and there are privacy issues related.

About the deal, question is how much equity was involved. 100M in 10 years, but if it is just paper, than it may be just marketing. Reminds me of the SI-TheStreet deal.

It is a given that palms and cellulars will have barcode readers in the future. I think there will be a lot of software available that enables reading of codes and connecting to the web. Just an input device. Difficult to get a competitive advantage.
One area might be to own the database with barcodes. However, companies don't want to pay a high commission to one provider, so they will supply those codes to multiple code-database operaters.
