I learned something interesting recently. Some of my German friends have had their first kid. And now the wives are staying home. One of the wives is an architect and she wants to go back to work. She told me she was getting all kinds of crap for wanting to go back to work now that her kid is two. In Germany it is still typical for the woman to stay home when the kids are young like it was in the 1950s and 60s in the US. And a German family can still have a good lifestyle that is very comparable to an American lifestyle which requires both parents working. A single parent working plus the vaunted American lifestyle isn't possible in the the US of 2011. That tells you how messed up our form of capitalism is.
