Manafort faces forfeiture of assets:

Indictment makes clear that Mueller is seeking *a ton* of forfeiture--I imagine that gives him some serious leverage over Manafort 1/x

Carissa B Hessick? @CBHessick Oct 30

For one thing, because the indictment includes probable cause statements that a bunch of real estate is subject to forfeiture . . . 2/x

. . . Mueller should be able to seize those assets right now. That could create pressure on Manafort b/c he needs to pay legal bills. 3/x

Second, and perhaps more important, it is entirely unclear to me whether a presidential pardon would have any effect on a forfeiture 4/x
The concept behind forfeiture is that it is a proceeding against the *property* not the person. And so a pardon arguably would ... 5/x

... have no effect on the forfeiture proceeding. Anyway, there are many other implications to be drawn from the indictment. 6/x

But the significance of forfeiture (and possibly immediate seizure) of Manafort's assets shouldn't be underestimated. 7/7
