I think that Qualcomm's management is thinking beyond patent licensing for revenues. There is a lot of work to be done in delivering the promise of wireless data and its applications. Qualcomm is stretching the limits of what was possible with wireless, a step at a time. Establishing CDMA was a good step. If that fetches a billion dollars a year in revenue, they will take it. Next "Brew". Then some other enabling software.

Do you think you will be satisfied with the performance of 1xRT? Probably not. What about with HDR? Probably not. How long after you got your first computer did you say, "I think that is fast enough for my needs." (It took about 14 years for me). So there is still a decade of work to be done in wireless data development before you the end-user is satisfied with the performance.
