John:

We're better off if we spend too much and solve the problem than if we spend too little and it goes on and on and on.

I think it is about our country's survival - so yes I will argue this long and hard.

What is different between this downturn and the depression, is that we already have a litany of safety nets in place that weren't there in 1929. We didn't even have bank deposit insurance, so my Grandfather who worked all his life and sold his gold mine in Alaska just before the Depression lost most of his money that was in banks. How different it is today when we aren't even asked to tighten our belts a little. What is also different today than in 1929 is that we start the economic mess with absolutely huge debt obligations. Were it not for those obligations, I would be more inclined to agree with you. To quote Ben Stein however, "if something can't go on forever, it won't". We can't keep borrowing money as if it doesn't matter we need to make some choices.
