Jay Bookman from the AJC on the polling numbers on the stimulus bill gallup.com While popularity is important right now, I hope that Obama doesn't try to lead by trying to maintain his poll numbers. I don't have a clue what is really needed to keep things here from going further down the wrong path but obviously, something needs to be done. I would hope that some sort of sacrifice will be asked for when it is appropriate. I don't think that we can keep spending the way we have been spending. But I do think the government is the only one that has the clout and the ability to spend us out of this recession. I can't tell(I haven't been watching all that closely) if the Republicans really believe that tax cuts are the only way or if they have been saying that for so long that it is knee jerk for them. Or maybe that is the only song and dance that they know and they are just trying to score political points. I think this is the wrong time for trying to score points and there is much more need to get things done. There should be a time for those who have benefitted the most from living in this country to sacrifice something as well, even it would mean, god forbid, higher taxes. But this is something that we will all need to give up something for. Neal
