You OK with letting the aged suffer?
Well, koan, right now the way Social Security and Medicare is structured, it is a very good deal for the old and the retiring Baby Boomers. No question about that. However, if it continues the way it is now, it will literally bankrupt this country and the next two generations will see their lives impoverished as a result.
So the question isn't "you ok with letting the aged suffer?" Rather, the question is "are you ok with stealing the livelihood of the next two generations and letting them suffer in order to let the old folks live large today?"
When my old dad just got out of the hospital recently, after spending 40 days and $200K there, he was complaining to me about the doctor's treatment of him. I'll tell you what I told him. "Stop your complaining. You live in the Golden Age of health care. By the time I get to your age, they'll just pull the plug on me, because there won't be any money left after your generation and the Baby Boomer generation dies off."
Of course, my dad and I have a great relationship and he laughed and acknowledged that what I was saying was true. But my point is a valid one. If I have to choose between a good life for my dad and I on the one hand or a good life for my sons on the other, I'll choose my sons every single time. It's the only moral thing to do. My dad agrees with me. It's the HUMAN imperative.
That is the real choice before us now. Do we choose the old or do we choose the next generations? I choose the next generations. |
