I agree. Cellphones on systems with adequate call capacity will be more fashionable.

In reference to a previous debate I hooked our friend Maurice to, I am actually surprised anything works at 30,000 feet travelling 300 miles an hour. Considering a cell is at most 30 miles wide at 800mhz, you are faced with a new site ever 5 minutes. That is even assuming you have uniform coverage coast-to-coast, which no one has.

Two other things we learned from this: with the alternative being always-knowing network-based E911 systems tracking our movements compared to Snaptrack, I'll demand Snaptrack. If it can tell them what floor I am trapped between, sign me up.

Globalstar doesn't have or need a gateway on the East Coast.

I will forever argue against cell-phone usage on a plane guided by electronic controls like the Boeing 767. (fly by wire) You don't know if your cellphone is acting within normal FCC limits that day nor do you know if the last service technician who left the electronics bay underneath the aircraft remembered to replace all the shields on the equipment.

Now we know what the end result will most likely be the next time a plane is hijacked.

Hmmm... Exploding ball of flames or a razorblade?

Hijackers can expect to get their ass kicked next time they try this.
