Siemens Chooses Open Text's Livelink for Enterprise-Wide Knowledge Management
Livelink Enables Siemens to Reduce Costs and Increase Competitive Advantage
CHICAGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 3, 1999--Open Text Corporation (NASDAQ:OTEX - news; TSE:OTC - news) announced today that Siemens Information and Communication Network (ICN) and Siemens Business Services (SBS) have chosen Livelink as their standard internal communications platform.
SBS (Siemens Business Services) supplies complete IT solutions, ranging from consulting and outsourcing, through the provision and use of Best Practices experience, to optimize a company's existing IT infrastructure. SBS uses Livelink in its Knowledge Orbit for the effective knowledge management of the entire business. In addition, Livelink is used in various projects for project management and
documentation. Siemens has virtual Consulting Teams worldwide who also use Livelink to exchange project experiences, define solutions and manage various document collections.
Siemens ICN makes product, marketing and customer information available to its worldwide sales organization over Livelink. The ICN division sells products and solutions for voice, data and mobile
communications in over 160 countries, making Siemens ICN the leading supplier of carrier, mobile and enterprise networks. A new addition to Siemens ICN's product range are products and solutions for computer telephony, to respond to the strong and growing demand for the integration of the internet and telephone networks.
Within Siemens ICN, the Siemens IT Net division is responsible for the knowledge-based network business and has set up a knowledge base using Livelink, which staff regularly contribute to. An additional
Livelink server has been set up by Siemens IT Net for enterprise-wide deployment. Internal departments send their orders for Livelink directly to this Livelink server, which then processes licensing requirements.
''With Livelink, Siemens is achieving our strategic goals of cost reduction and increased competitive advantage due to quality improvements, optimization of internal procedures, reduction of the time needed to access relevant information and accelerated business processes,'' said Frieder Zimmermann, Siemens.ICN VD IT Net. ''One of our main reasons for choosing Livelink is because it is an out-of-the-box solution with proven scalability that does not require the installation of any client-side software other than a standard browser. Additionally Siemens has developed a number of application
modules to support individual requirements of the customers.''
Siemens is taking full advantage of Livelink's comprehensive functionality, including Change Agents for notifying users about changed or updated information, navigational assistance, project-oriented discussion groups, push technology, workflow for more efficient business procedures, document management, task lists and scheduling. Siemens is also expecting significant cost reductions as information only needs to be stored in one place, which is protected from unauthorized access by several levels of security protection.
''We at Open Text are pleased to see Siemens play a major role in our European operations at both the customer and partner level,'' said Tony Heywood, Vice President for EMEA, Open Text Corporation.
''Siemens has been one of the pioneers in the diffusion of Internet technology and we are pleased with this mutually beneficial relationship.''
