1997 amd is hardly the same as 1980 intel. currently, no matter how good a chip amd makes, when the consumer sees a machine that has an amd chip, the first words that come to mind are "cheap, corner-cutting, off-brand, imitation..." etc. i am NOT saying that amd's chips are any worse than intel's -- just that they are so in people's minds. did you read the blurb a while ago about midwest micro no longer selling non-intel chips? these sorts of allegiances can definitely be changed (for example, the image transformation of japanese cars from the 70s to now), but it is very much an uphill battle. why not just take the easy route and invest in intel? if the pie is going to grow for everyone, it will grow at least as much for intel as it will for amd. either way, i wish you luck in whatever investment decisions you make.
