ed, you are getting closer now...
what's happening is that there is a new generation of ERP's and deployment infrastructures like Win NT and servers instead of mini's and mainframes. these new ERP's are allot easier to implement and more intuativeto users.

I've computed that this new platform has h/w that is 1/10 the cost and the infrastructure tools are 1/5 the cost and the systems go in in 1/10 the time.
raw data traditional future
hw/OS mini 300,000 server 30,000
erp traditional 500,000 new 100,000
database 250,000 25,000

Oracle still has the database that plays in this solution on both Win NT or Unix..
But, with all the other components being 1/10 the cost they need to drop prices or the database could could more than all the other pieces put to gether.
Plus, their ERP offering as always been weak.
But, for a multi-billion dollar compnay to select a Fourthshift or datawworls, they need to finish their oracle versions completely.
FS's is with an advandced message bussing system which will allow
for better integration in a ww platform.
