I think that what Mr. Forsyth is getting at is that a man with a machine shakes more than he can hold. I agree.
However, it is ultimately the man and not the machine that does the damage. Would Mr. Forsyth be willing to give up his automobile in the interest of saving lives? I think not. (BTW, airbags have killed more children than school shootings)

Another purpose handguns serve is to save the life of the wielder of the weapon if it is wielded responsibly.
Handguns are also quite effective at scaring the living hell out of a possible aggressor, especially if the weapon is of a large calibre. A Colt .45 Auto once saved me from bodily harm from three trespassers on my property. No shots were fired. No one was harmed. No one ever trespassed on my property again.
Still, I prefer my 12 gauge Browning Buck Special with 00 Buckshot as a primary means of self defense.
So, if you really want my handguns, you might get them. But you will never, never get my long guns. Never.
