Some quick raw numbers:

downloaded Netscape 4.0 from Netscape site - 1.6Mbit/sec
uploaded MSIE 4.0 to an ISP - 250Kbit/sec (apx 2X ISDN 2B)
downloaded MSIE 4.0 from an ISP - 340Kbit/sec

The ISP I used is my current ISP that I connect to via ISDN. Of course, the traffic had to go across the net. They currently have 2 T-1 connections (1 each to MCI and UUNet).

Uplink speed is I presume limited by the modem, but still much better than ISDN. The download speed from the ISP was an eye-opener.

You definately notice the difference between high-bandwidth well-connected sites (Netscape) vs. typical ISPs. This differences will begin to magnify as more people get cable modems.
