RYOBI JOINS ON PRESS IMAGING BAND WAGON
DRUPA, GERMANY: MAY 20
Ryobi is building a digital press using Presstek's Profire imaging system, becoming one of two companies to declare themselves as new partners for the US direct imaging specialist.

The second company is Didde which will build a retrofittable imaging unit to add direct imaging capacity to its direct mail presses. The unit would be used to create versioned editions of much longer production runs.

But it is the Ryobi that will make the most impact. The Japanese company has designed an entirely new press which is being called the 3304 DI. It has a central impression cylinder with two blanket cylinders. In turn each blanket cylinder is fed by split plate cylinders not unlike the Karat DI press in configuration.

It is a waterless press, but unlike Karat has a full inking train and is printing A3 sheets. Imaging time is two and half minutes at 1270dpi on PearlDry plates. Ryobi expects to deliver the first presses in December at a price of less than $400,000. It reckons to build 250 a year.

Drupa is proving a landmark for Presstek with ceo Bob Hallman saying: "This is the Drupa where we achieve critical mass. Before Drupa we wondered whether direct imaging would explode - it has and when markets achieve critical mass interesting things happen."

Hallman continued to say that the company would be having discussions with two or three potential partners during the course of the show.

As well as the announcements regarding companies using its technology, Presstek has brought the Dimension 400 platesetter to the event and a prototype of the Dimension 800. Both use the new imaging heads and can work with any thermal plate on the market. Product testing is underway with different plates and controlled sales in the US begin after Drupa. The Dimension 800 begins the same process at the end of this year. A two page Dimension 200 using the same design is also under consideration. Such a platesetter would sell for less than $100,000.

The much discussed Anthem plate is released for controlled sales with the end of Drupa with a ramp up of production underway. Hallman gave details of what he called the polyceramic hydrophilic surface on the plate which allows it to be used without gumming and to be almost impervious to press chemistries. At the 24 trial sites the plate has been used on all kinds of work with all kinds of fount solution and survived so well that the release to the market is being accelerated.
