Those who look at Intel's warning as a dark omen that the end is nigh will miss the fact that the end started a long time ago.

Good old Briefing and their piling on. Do they think the world will stop needing computers to go with the bandwidth? Barrett's statement from a year or so ago, roughly, 'only 4% of the servers that will be required to drive the Internet in 2005 are out there now' still applies. And, every IDC poll I've seen lately shows Intel based servers growing faster than any other kind. The Sun lovers will scream, but that's what IDC has been saying, over and over. Problem is servers aren't yet big enough with Intel to dominate over the desktop stuff. I think the growth rate is as much as twice, so, when does it catch up and start to dominate?

Intel's performance has left a lot to be desired this year, but they are a long way from the end.
