I think AP security failed because it was too PC to keep potential terrorists off the planes. But it was a major mistake to federalize them, as it usually is to federalize anything

Luckily airports can not opt-out of federal staffed security and use private firms, like the pilot airports. SanFran's AP security is supposedly a model system that works pretty well.
